ACNE is very common in both adolescents and adults in Africa. How do you prevent it?
Health tips with Lawrencia
Hi there. Thanks for joining me on Diet and Fitness. My name is Lawrencia and today am talking about ACNE.
In Africa, one of the health conditions affecting millions aside obesity and lipoma is acne. It is very common in both adolescents and adults. It is characterized by whiteheads, blackheads and blemishes.
Does iodine contribute to acne? There is not much evidence to make that conclusion. But it seems safe to conclude that abnormally high intake can trigger the condition in some individuals.
According to researchers, there are various factors that may contribute to or worsen acne. These can be environmental, physical or emotional factors. Consider the following:
- The use of oil-based cosmetics can cause or worsen acne.
- Humidity or exposure to dirt can cause or worsen the condition.
- Premenstrual changes or hormonal changes can contribute to one getting acne.
- Physical irritation from occlusive clothing, headbands, hats and helmets can cause the condition.
Proper skin care is important in the treatment of acne. Now let’s consider some effective remedies for this condition.
Check your makeup
In adult women, makeup is the major factor causing acne. Oily makeup is the problem. The pigments in the makeups, rouges, cleansing creams, or night moisturizers are not the problem, and neither is the water in the product. It is just the oil.
The oil is usually a derivative of fatty acids that are more potent than your own fatty acids. Therefore use a non-oil based makeup if you are prone to acne. Do not wear makeup that irritates your skin.
Simple Makeup Oil Test
Get a sheet of cotton-bond typing paper and rub a thick mark of your makeup onto it. Wait for 24 hours and check for an oil ring. If your makeup is oil based, the oil will spread out. Stay away from a oily makeup.

Use lemon juice
The acidic property of lemons can be very useful in the treatment of your acne. Lemon will clean out dirt that has accumulated in the pores and will harden the sebum. You can use it on your skin daily but if it is too drying then use it every two or three days.
- Rub a slice of lemon on the affected area and leave it for a few hours before rinsing with clean water.
- You can also mix lemon juice with rose water in equal amounts and use the solution to wash the affected area thoroughly.
Lemon juice contains L-asorbic acid, which dries out the acne, as well as antibacterial compounds that fight acne-producing bacteria. Lemon juice can be incredibly effective if used properly but care must be taken to avoid increased sensitivity and sun damage.
Use oatmeal
Oatmeal is beneficial in reducing acne because it cleanses your skin pores and absorbs excess oil. Additionally, it washes your skin.- Mix one teaspoon of honey and the juice of half a lemon in a cup of cooked oatmeal.
- Rub this mixture over your skin.
- Leave it on for about 15 – 30 minutes and then rinse with lukewarm water.
- Do this once or twice a week.
Summary
Anytime you are at the shop to buy a cosmetic, read the label. Buy oil free cosmetics. Remember to keep your hands off your face as much as possible because bacteria carried by the hands can cause or worsen your acne.
Use lemons to clear out dirt that are stuck in the pores. Oatmeal is also very effective in this treatment because it absorbs excess oil and wash the skin as well.
